Les préparatifs du voyage

En octobre 2022, nous avons eu la chance d'accueillir à La Calamine des élèves finlandais du Pargas Svenska Gymnasium. Nous avions préparé des présentations sur notre pays, sur notre région, notre école et sur la vie dans la Communauté germanophone. Pendant les cinq jours de leur séjour, nous avons notamment visité Bruxelles et Aix-la-Chapelle. Les Finlandais ont ainsi découvert notre vie et notre culture. Au début du mois de mars, c'était à notre tour de nous envoler vers la Finlande pour nous retrouver.

Notre voyage en Finlande

Le 1er mars 2023, nous avons pris l'avion à l'aéroport de Bruxelles pour la capitale de la Finlande, Helsinki. Après un trajet en bus, nous sommes arrivés au Pargas Svenska Gymnasium vers 15 heures. Là, nous avons revu les élèves de notre programme d'échange qui nous ont fait découvrir leur école et les plats typiques de leur région. Nous étions libres le soir et avons eu l'occasion de passer un peu de temps avec les élèves finlandais.

Jeudi matin, les élèves avaient prévu une présentation, comme nous l'avions fait à leur arrivée en Belgique. Nous avons ensuite assisté à un cours de français et d'allemand et échangé avec des élèves qui ne participaient pas au projet. Dans l’après-midi, nous avons visité la ville de Pargas avant de prendre le ferry pour nous initier au sauna à Nagu. Nous avons terminé cette deuxième journée autour d’un bon buffet de pizza.

Le vendredi, nous avons passé l’après-midi et le soir à Turku, où nous avons visité la ville, fait du shopping, joué au mini-golf et mangé.

Le samedi, nous avons eu toute la journée de libre alors que les étudiants finlandais avaient prévu leur propre programme. Certains sont allés faire de la luge, d'autres sont allés au sauna. Le soir, nous nous sommes retrouvés pour une dernière soirée entre élèves.

Le dernier point prévu au programme était la visite de la capitale Helsinki, que nous avons découverte le dimanche. Une guide nous a fait visiter la ville et la bibliothèque centrale, appelée Oodi. Puis, nous avons eu un peu de temps libre avant de nous retrouver à la gare pour aller à l'aéroport.

Sprachminderheit – Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede

Genau wie wir als Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft in Belgien sind auch unsere Austauschschüler Teil einer Minderheit, der schwedischsprachigen Gemeinschaft in Finnland. Sie haben uns von Vorurteilen erzählt, die finnischsprachige Finnen ihnen gegenüber haben, z.B. dass sie viel Geld und einen bestimmten Kleidungsstil haben und dass jede Familie mindestens ein Boot besitzt.

Sie erzählten uns auch, dass sie sich von den meisten Menschen, die nicht zur Minderheit gehören, ausgegrenzt fühlen. Sie haben oft das Gefühl, verurteilt zu werden, weil ihre Muttersprache Schwedisch ist. Da diese Sprache nur von einem kleinen Teil der Bevölkerung gesprochen wird, sind die Möglichkeiten, die schwedischsprachigen Finnen nach der Schule offenstehen, begrenzt. Viele von ihnen möchten eines Tages nach Schweden ziehen, weil sie dort viel mehr Möglichkeiten haben und sich keine Sorgen um die Sprachbarriere machen müssen. Wir sprachen auch über Politik. Laut unseren Gastfamilien werden bei vielen politischen Entscheidungen ihre Ansichten und Meinungen nicht berücksichtigt oder respektiert.

European values

Several European countries share common beliefs and preferences. They go from accepting that all humans are equal to understanding that we live in a diverse society.

European values are important in the context of an exchange programme because they offer a setting in which we can understand and appreciate the cultural, social, and political context of European countries. Our trip to Finland was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a different environment, to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and to see how these values manifest themselves in everyday life.

This exchange trip permitted us to open to the world and its differences. Thanks to the engagement of the Finnish students and the activities we did, we have gained a better understanding of European values and their meaning.

The difference to Belgium

One thing that triggered all of us were the differences between the Finnish and Belgium school system. As a Finnish student, you have the possibility to choose between many different subjects that don’t exist in our school. Another difference is that everything was done on computers. All their documents were digitalised, and they even pass their exams on a programme on their computer. They also do not have to write as many exams as we have. They only have to write exams at the end of their last year and only around 4 to 5 exams.

Another thing that is different in Finland is religion. Most Finnish people are Lutherans. Lutheranism is the Protestant movement that grew out of the writings of the German theologian Martin Luther.

We saw significant differences in the architecture of buildings and houses in Belgium and in Finland. While in Belgium we build in height and with materials such as concrete, Finland builds more in width and with materials such as wood. In Paragas, almost all the houses were made in an old style and very colourful. Something that we also noticed is the cleanliness of the streets. We think that we might have seen one or two trash bags on the street, but that is it. It really differed from our streets here in Belgium and we were really impressed by it.

In the beginning, we many of our exchange students appeared very shy and not talkative at all. We thought that the stereotype we had in mind was reinforced. But after some time, as we got to know each other better, we found out how unbelievably nice and fun they were, and that it just took them more time.

If we had to sum up our trip to Finland, we would describe it as a wonderful experience. If we had the opportunity to do it again, we definitely would.
