Our 2016 trip to Pargas
The four days of our Finland project were without any doubt an unforgettable experience which will surely stay in our memory for a long time.
After a safe but tiring journey, we first met our hosts and their families in Turku, from where we then went to their homes. Our Finnish hosts were really welcoming and kind and we immediately had a lot of things to talk about.
During the following days we would attend the lessons with our Finnish hosts and in the afternoon proceed to various activities like visiting Turku and Pargas or going to the sauna. In the evening we would usually come all together at the home of one of the Finns to celebrate our stay… and eventually become a group of good friends.
In some classes like Finnish or Swedish it was difficult to understand what the teacher was talking about, but discovering the Finnish school system and comparing it to the Belgian one was really interesting, especially when you consider all the differences like the integration of the mobile phone and the computer during the lessons. Modern technologies have become one of the most important aspects of our everyday life, therefore, including it to the regular school lessons seems perfectly appropriate in my eyes.
The Finnish people were all really nice but much more distant than what we are used to in Belgium. Furthermore they were really respectful and attentive, something which is unfortunately sometimes missing among our people.
We also discovered a lot of similarities between our German-speaking minority and the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. Like us, the Finns are forced to know both official languages of their country and eventually English, which is always important. Also, the communication between the respective language groups isn’t always that easy, the cultures vary and that makes it even more difficult.
In a nutshell, the experience which we made during our stay in Finland was awesome! We met people with a completely different culture and a country which is absolutely worth visiting. It was a trip that we could recommend to everyone.
